Richmond Canal Cruises

Proving, once again, that there is always more to explore, we spent 40 minutes on Saturday touring Richmond's Riverfront Canals.  I've lived here all my life and this was my first time taking the boat tour.

We didn't actually plan on taking the tour.  We were visiting some of Richmond's breweries with out of town friends and we stopped for for dinner at Conch Republic.  Next thing you know we were sitting on a flat bottom boat listening to a history lesson being narrated by Cotton.

Cotton, you see, was the name of our boat captain.   And as you cruise the canal he gives you all the history of how the canal originally came to be...and how it came to be in it's present form.  He also points out some very unique facts about the city of Richmond and other city sites you might want to explore.

I enjoyed the city's skyline from this unique perspective. We were on the 6 o'clock tour so the sun was still up pretty high in the sky.

Meet Cotton...He likes it when we say "Hi Cotton"

You can find the boat tours in the Turning Basin between 14th and Dock St. on Virginia Street.  Or as Mr. Busy points out it is right next to the Southern Railway Taphouse Patio.  The tours leave at the top of the hour and last approximately 40 minutes.  They run from April to November with varying hours.  Check out their website for the hours and days of availability.  Adults were $6 while children and seniors were $5.

Explore Richmond's Canals...it was on my bucket list.  I just didn't think I would be seeing them from such a unique place.  Thanks to our friends we now have a great new story to tell and memory forever.

Happy adventuring.

MTT Post #2

This week the training had to be done alone on Saturday since work obligations had me busy Sunday morning.  6 miles for the long run.  Since I also have another goal in mind I figured a run in my neighborhood would do the trick.  The difficulty in this was I had to make sure I was getting in the miles but had no idea how many miles there were in the neighborhood.  It turned out almost 6 miles on the dot from my front door and then back.

Not too shabby

I didn't feel too bad when I was done.  Managed to make it out with some friends and tour some Richmond breweries.  So I feel like I'm ready to add some extra miles.

On the weekends one day is supposed to be cross training and the other day is the long run.  Since I did my long run on Saturday, I will have to work in cross training after work on Sunday.  What I need to do is work out what that training will be.  I'm leaning towards biking since that is something we enjoy doing as a family.

Looking at my week ahead I have one evening already full so I'll have to find a way to drag myself out of bed for a morning run....already dreading that.  But the other nights are clear.  Looking ahead and planning my time has been helpful.

Off to work now.  Hope you are having a great weekend.

Happy adventuring.

Corporate 4 Miler and More Training

Yesterday evening, after work, some of my co-workers and friends participated in Sports Backer's Corporate 4 Miler.  It's suppose to be an evening of promoting health in the work place while enjoying time being active with some of Richmond's finest employees.  Banks, law firms, counties, hospitals....people who work....all come together to have a great night of fun.  There is always a band, beer on tap, and food to be had.  And did I mention a 4 mile run?

Since I'm now in training mode....still weird to say....I didn't hesitate to sign up.  Of course my employer made it even more enticing by offering to pay most of the cost.  I couldn't pass that up, right?  Plus I've run it the two previous years so I knew what a fun time it was.

The course is on the grounds of Innsbrook Office Park in Richmond.  It just makes since to run a Corporate Race on the grounds of several of Richmond's Corporate Offices.  Thankfully most of the route is shaded by race time and the scenery is really nice.

Before all of the festivities began

This makes me chuckle everytime

Post race hydration is a must

Not bad for being my 3rd day in a row running

Like most races there was a complimentary t-shirt, there were 3 water stops on the course, water/sports drinks at the finish and there was a timer.  No timing chip but a timer so you could record your own time.

So far this week I have over 20 miles logged.  With that being said TGIF because Fridays are REST days!

This weekend we have a banquet to attend for our oldest daughter, friends coming in town for a visit and some breweries to check out.  Somehow I'm even working an extra 12 hour shift.  Nothing like booking up the entire weekend!

Happy adventuring!

Early Morning Running

I'm not a fan of it.  I try to avoid it.  I think of a million excuses to not do it.  I have done it in the past when no other option seemed possible.  It never lasts for more than a day or two with me.  I enjoy getting up, showering and having coffee while my brain wakes up.  Not getting up, changing into running gear and going out to run.  I'm like a sloth the first thirty minutes of the day so running and morning have just not been sustainable for me.  I must overcome this.  Since there is so much training involved with the MTT (Marathon Training Team) program I am going to HAVE to look for time in places I don't usually look.  That means mornings.  So this week, the first week of training, I set my alarm for 5am...and I begrudgingly got myself up....and ran.  I was not happy about it.  I came up with a dozen excuses to hit the snooze.  But I did it.  I convinced myself it was just one morning.  It would free up my evening for another important thing I couldn't miss.  I always think that after I'm done with an early morning run I will feel energized, invigorated and full of motivation to keep up the routine.  I usually just feel hot, sticky and ready to coffee :-)

It's my hope that I can force myself to get up at least once a week and do a mid week run.  Otherwise I will either miss other events or miss out on training.  If anyone seems my morning run motivation laying around....let me know!

On a good note this week I've logged in over 16 miles since Saturday morning.  I have a race tonight, The Corporate 4 Miler, that will make up my Thursday training.  And finally rest day on Friday!

If you are a morning runner and have any ideas let me know.  I've probably tried them but it's can't hurt to see if there are some new ideas out there.

Happy adventuring.

Tuesday Night Fun.....WHAT?

It's called a Fun Run.  It's not a race, it's not necessarily designed to be training, nothing too organized about it....it's just fun.  When I trained for the half marathon I would just go out once a week and run a long run and increase the distance each time.  Probably not the best way but it was MY way.  For the full marathon things are going to be a bit different.  Sports Backers Marathon Training Team (MTT) has, what seems, a better approach.  But it does involve mid-week training.  Sooooooooooo I started looking at different ways to get in my running without it being the same old-same old.  Then it hit me! There is a local running club/group, Tri-Cities Road Runners, that I belong to and they have a weekly 'fun run'.  I had never attended, blame it on my introvert self, but now seemed like a great time to give it a try.

They meet at a local restaurant, in Old Towne Petersburg, and run an unspecified distance.  Seems like it's a runners choice type thing.  Then after the run they stick around the restaurant for appetizers.  I like running and I like food so win-win.  I Facebooked the group that I would be there and come Tuesday evening I put on my running shoes and joined in on the Tuesday Night Fun Run.  It was just a hair over 4 miles and like advertised it started and finished at the restaurant.  And since it's just a group of people getting together to run there is not cost like at an organized race.  So really it's win-win-win.

Geez that is a lot of miles

Part of the trail we ran with the fun run

I did come away from this with one thing....I need a different way to track my running.  I use the App Runkeeper but since it's on my phone I tend to forget to turn it off.  Plus it drains my battery.  I have been browsing Amazon for trackers and have a feeling I'm going to go with the Garmin Forerunner 15.  If anyone has used one before any advise would be appreciated.

Next Tuesday Mr. Busy and I are going to a concert but after that I will be making the fun runs part of my weekly habit :-)

Happy running/adventuring my friends.

Summer Time Fun and MTT Post #1

The unofficial start of summer was just over a week ago and The Busy Bryants have been busy trying to make the most out of every single second!

Mural in Richmond

We've ran a couple races, been through not one but two weeks worth of dance recitals, joined a pool, finished out the Girl Scout year and I even took the plunge and signed up to run a marathon.

You did hear right...as if I'm not busy enough I signed up for a marathon!  Well actually right now I'm just signed up for the training but signing up for the marathon is just a technicality.  We started out on this past Sunday with a short run along Richmond's streets.  I trained for the half marathons on my own but I felt like taking that next big step I would need someone to help (push) me along.  The marathon training teams (MTT) are sub-divided into color teams.  I'm on the Pink team.  I'll be giving up my Sunday mornings of leisure for long runs and sweat.  But I'm excited to see it through.  My plan, and don't hold me to it, will be to post the progress here.

Hope everyone is enjoying their summer and making the most of it.  Happy adventuring.
